If your focus is to learn the topic
as the basis to earn a Good Living ,, then,
The Consumer is King

The above statement is NOT meant to exalt the Consumer nor the Capitalist System. Is however meant to situate the facets of the most general topic of Electricity is the ways mankind has made use of it! Helpful as you shall see when offering you the several fruitful places to start ones investigation or training. I will make this clear quickly. If you review the history of mankind's implementation of electrical technology you see that there are specific tasks performed by it that came forth as a result the wants of the consumer. Some of the applications came first, others just a little latter. Let's not quibble about the exact order right now. We should try to make logical categories of "enterprise" be apparent for us is all.

Lighting

The heating element preceded the light bulb The improvement of the light bulb, in stages, culminated at some point of its implementation such that it displaced the use of tallow, paraffin wax, whale oil and natural gas for lighting. We would bring up topics in this, just a little less general, subject relevant to the steps you may need to take before going out to make money providing "Lighting". If the history of Lighting is to be discussed then that would be done subsumed by a prior assessment of the fore mentioned needed steps. Get it? Well, what would come next? For the time being we are thinking historically so back to Heat Let's not loose sight of something; people would pay for the ability to see where it is dark because they in turn would be more productive and make more money.

Heating
(welding, iron smelting)

The prospect of being able to stay warm in your home or put heat on a thing more cheaply or with less effort appeals to me. I am sure it appeals to you. So early on electricity was devoted to development of the heating element and an industry around that. Therefore "Heating" is a topic category for us in the proposition of a Electrical Engineering Course. The Bessemer Process comes to mind. Where would you begin that investigation, that basic relationship between current and heat? That starting point should be on our list.

Communication - Telecommunication

The Telegraph is no longer a big deal. Telegrams are no longer sent. The Telephone Technology which we still use has morphed into many new forms. There are shared starting points but still the paths diverge somewhat. ( Internet ) Are you grasping the role of these Categories? What category next?

Batteries - Electroplating - Electrolysis

The strict DC nature of electricity with the connection to its chemical interactions. A branch of science in its own right comprise a broad subject. This is a nice large category.

Motors - Dynamos - Generators

Rotation Torque, the facility of, and Mechanics, Magnetism. Also a branch of science in its own right comprise a broad subject. This is a nice large category as well.

Recording and Record Keeping
(not necessarily sound)

Electricity is doing jobs for us. It helps us move things. It helps us see, helps us heat things, stay warm, cook, burn things if that's what we want. We can run chemical process and weld things. The advent of welding is very important. Electricity helps us communicate. Now for record keeping recognize the audio recording preceded the electric typewriter and data storage is not the same as addressable memory.

Amplification, the Public Address
Acoustic Engineering

The technique of amplification made much possible in all areas (AC) but it got of the ground with the sound so it makes sense to separate this amplification aspect from the broader recording category.

Radio Propagation, Radar
(astronomy too I suppose)

The wireless transmission of information by means of electromagnetic radiation (AC) can be set as an almost independent category.

Television, Video Processing

The video technique also can be dealt with almost independently a category by itself as well.

Control, Sensors, Measurement, Safety
(burglar-fire, access, the electron microscope)

The physical electro-mechanical body of knowledge an independent category.

Large Scale Power Generation, Power Transmission, an Industry in itself

The safe distribution of electrical power in both high current and high voltage situations a succinct category. Don't leave out Photovoltaics and Wind Turbines.

Computing - Memory
(originally mechanical - late advent electronics)

The digital realm with the aspect of retrievable addressable memory, square wave analysis and processing methods.

Transportation, Super Conductors
( MAGLEV, not just the electric car )

My God, how could one operate in the 21st. Century without some Working Knowledge of Electricity?

Horizon - EDM, 3D Printing etc. - New Physics
( Refrigeration, PLC, CNC, Robotics, Automation, AI )

The impact in tomorrow's 21st Century Manufacturing to include cryo-tech, liquid nitrogen etc..
